Costs Part 1 of 5 - Infertility treatment is supported financially by Medicare and by capped Safety Net reimbursements. Australia is one of the few countries in the world where the government supports infertility treatment, thus making it affordable to the majority of people. As with most medical expenses there are additional out of pocket costs and with infertility treatment this relates to highly labour intensive activities and state-of-the-art technology. For example one In Vitro Fertilisation (IVF) cycle may require over 140 hours of work by numerous highly qualified staff.
- To ensure maximum access to Medicare and the Safety Net register with Medicare for the Safety Net. Individuals are automatically registered but couples must register. The Medicare Safety Net has a threshold for out of pocket expenses that must be met each calendar year prior to accessing Safety Net rebates. In 2009 this was $1,111.60 per couple or family. It is due to increase in 2010.
- Register your bank details with Medicare to expedite payments. Cheques from Medicare take approximately 6 weeks, whilst direct deposit into a bank account will occur approximately 3 days after processing of the claim. Register here.
From 1st January 2010 proposed changes to Medicare will be implemented. For further information on costs click here. « Previous | Next » |
